Announcement of 13th FestPac Guam Programming Chairs
And Callout for FestPac Delegates
[Hagåtna] – The 13th FestPac Guam Planning Committee and the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency (CAHA) announced that the following individuals were selected to serve as the chairs for the 4 committees to oversee the various programs that Guam will be participating in during the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts scheduled for June 10 -21, 2020 in Hawaii.
- Dr. Judy Flores, Demonstrations/ Exhibitions Chair shall oversee Visual Arts; Floral Arts; Culinary Arts; Canoe Voyaging; Photography; Healing Arts; Body Ornamentation; Carving; Handicrafts; Film; Traditional Games; Weaving and Tattooing.
- Dr. Michael Bevacqua, Literary Arts Chair shall oversee Publications and Indigenous Languages.
- Ms. Eileen Meno, Performing Arts Chair shall oversee Traditional Song, Dance and Chants; Drama/ Theatre; Oral traditions and Storytelling; and Fashion/ wearables art show.
- Ms. Maria Barcinas – Special Events/ Activities Chair shall oversee Youth Ambassador Program; Canoe Regatta; Culinary umu/imu cook off – underground cooking; Traditional Games Competition and Workshops, forums and seminars.
The Chairpersons were selected based on the criteria of mastery/experience, impact and contributions to the community.
The Planning Committee and Programming Chairs will work closely together to ensure that Guam’s presentation during the 2020 FestPac showcase the works of Guam’s finest artisans and reflects the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous people - the CHamoru through exhibitions, traditional arts demonstrations and through song, dance and chant. Mrs. Ann Marie Arceo, Head of Delegation and Senator Kelly Marsh (Taitano) PhD serve as Co-Chairs of the Planning Committee.
In addition, delegate applications will be available beginning October 8, 2019 on the CAHA website, www.guamcaha.org or at the CAHA Office located on the 3rd Floor of the Angela Flores Building, 243 Martyr Street in Hagåtña directly across the Guam Public Library and in between the DNA Building and the Arriola Law Offices. Interested parties have until 4:00 p.m. Thursday, October 31, 2019 to submit their application with supporting materials to the CAHA Office or via email to jacqueline.balbas@caha.guam.gov.
The Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture (FestPac) is held every four years since 1972, and brings together artists and cultural practitioners from around the Pacific region for two weeks of festivity. It is recognized as a major regional cultural event, and is the largest gathering in which Pacific peoples unite to enhance their respect and appreciation of one another. 27 Pacific Island Nations and Territories have come together to share and exchange their cultures at each Pacific Arts Festival. In 2016, Guam hosted the 12th Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture. The 2016 festival allowed Guam to showcase its unique CHamoru culture that has survived colonization of the past and modernization of the present.
